Do dusty places make you sneeze? Guinea pigs are no different, especially when there is hay all over their cage. So if your pet sneezes every once in a while then you have no need to worry. This is completely normal. Sneezing and coughing are caused by the dusty hay.

begins to cough and sneeze uncontrollably then its time to take a trip to the vet. You see, guinea pigs are very prone to infection. So the coughing could be a throat infection or possibly a lung infection. If you notice this symptom, it would be wise to take your pet to the vet right away. If you wait and it does have a lung infection then it can develop a respiratory illness that can lead to pneumonia. Eventually causing the death of your dear friend.

Another type of health problem that is often overlooked is scratching. Again, this is normal when it is done in moderation, but excessive scratching is not. Excessive scratching is a sign of parasites or a fungal infection. When it comes to parasites, it is usually very easy to know. Brush through your guinea pigs hair and you will be able to see them. Mites however, can’t be seen with the naked eye.

Lice can usually be killed with a medicated shampoo from your vet, be sure to bathe them twice. Bathe them once then a week later bathe them again. Lice can sometimes leave their eggs, this is why bathing them twice is important. If its a fungal infection your vet will give you medication.
