naturally the first thing you want to do is pick him up and cuddle him. But how would you like it if someone you were completely unfamiliar with forced their affections on you against your will? Especially someone he thinks is a huge giant compared to him. When you first adopt a

he’s going to be completely unfamiliar with his new surroundings and with you so you need to give him a little time to get used to his new home.

You keep a little distance and give him food and water; animals always know who the person is that is feeding them so that will build trust. Don’t tower over him looking down at him other then when you feed him, back off a little and give him some space at first.

The best thing to do is let him come to you and the great news is there is a method that will make this happen fast. It’s called bribery. You are going to bribe your little pet into loving your (ha). You will bribe your little pal with delicious treats.

You show him the treat you have for him. Then you set it just outside his cage door and open the door. Not so far outside the door where he actually has to come out but where he can stay inside and just reach to get it. You can put the treat on top of a bottle cap (the tall screw on kind) because this will elevate it to eye level for him, make it easier for him to reach and most importantly it puts a barrier between him and you giving him just a touch more security.

You quietly sit a comfortable distance away and just wait. After some time slowly close the cage door, take the treat and leave. You can start doing this the very first day you adopt a guinea pig and do it several times a day or pretty much any time you visit him.

He will eventually get the idea that if he wants his treat he’s going to have to come and get it. When he does it will be a big success as you are on the way to winning him over. And each time he takes it you move a little bit closer to his cage. You can also place the treat a little further out from his door on a gradual basis.

Next you will want to place your hand close, but not too close to the treat, but don’t budge when he gets his treat, don’t even budge for a while after he gets it. Put your hand closer and closer until it’s even touching the treat and then even put it on the tip of your finger then further up you finger and so on until it is in your palm.

By doing this on a very gradual basis like this when you adopt a guinea pig the trust will build and he will be eating out of your hand and you will both be very happy about the whole thing. And that will be nice.
