About Us – Our History and Motivations
Hi – Just wanted to tell you a little about ourselves…
We love guinea pigs. We both had guinea pigs as children. When we got married and had our own children, we remembered how great pigs were for us as kids and we began buying them for our own family.
Over the years, we have owned a total of nine guinea pigs – three of those are presently living with us now.
As it turned out, we discovered that we share two things in common: we both love guinea pigs and we are both “info hogs” (so I guess that makes us guinea pig info hogs). So, over the years we’ve collected a lot of info on guinea pigs that we wanted to share. That’s how this web site was born. And there is new info published on the web every day that we also collect and share.
When we first started this web site, we decided to focus on C&C cages because we’ve done a lot of research and had a lot of experience with them.
As kids, our guinea pigs were always kept in small pet store cages. Our parents didn’t know any better. But, years ago as adults, we happened to stumble onto C&C (Cubes and Coroplast) cages. Over the past few years, we have built several cages of our own – putting in different features that we have seen online and have formed our own opinions about what we like and don’t like.
When you have to live with a cage day-in and day-out, you really get to know what annoys you and what delights you. For instance, any cage we build now has to have big openings. It was just such a pain (and took soooo much time) to change bedding in a large cage (or to try to pet or pick up your pigs) working through a small cage door.
Also, we had a little trouble with the plastic knob connectors that came with the cube sets. They were easy enough to put on, but they would occasionally pop off when we moved the cage during cleaning or when we were clipping on the water bottle. Finally we came up with the solution of adding a zip-tie where each plastic connector was to make a stronger joint. Then we realized, with this arrangement – we didn’t really need the plastic connectors. So the next cage we built used zip-ties. It was a little more work, but we love how sturdy they made our cage. We will never go back to the plastic ones.
Enough of our pet peeves. We’re here because we love guinea pigs – that’s all you need to know.
Enjoy the site and, most of all, enjoy your pigs.
